About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Medical Assistant II to work in the Presurgical Evaluation Clinic. This role is integral to a dynamic team, supporting healthcare professionals and ensuring top-quality service for patients. The clinic is dedicated to excellence in patient care. This position is 60%-80% time, working 24-32 hours per week, with varying hours Monday-Friday between 07:45 and 17:00. Requirements

  • Certification OR registration as a Medical Assistant OR completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, OR
  • Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology (include educational transcripts during application process)

  • Candidates must upload a copy of their educational transcripts if they are not certified/registered as a Medical Assistant or if they have not completed a Medical Assistant Program.

Responsibilities

  • Support Presurgical Evaluation Clinic patients.
  • Facilitate the smooth flow of patients through the clinic by interacting with patients, families, and staff.
  • Lead and ensure an efficient rooming process for patients, including obtaining vital signs, patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patients and related treatments.
  • Support the management of internal and external medical records to ensure accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Obtain routine laboratory samples such as urinalysis and blood work, as needed.
  • Perform related clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing information to other departments.
  • Work closely with the Central Sterile team to ensure delivery of reusable instruments for processing, accounting for return of all instruments to clinic, monitoring reports, and supporting organization of new instruments.
  • Stock supplies, stock rooms, and monitor expirations.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly audits.
  • Support strong patient experience metrics by providing high-quality, patient-centered care.
