About The Position

The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a 60% Medical Assistant II to support our Outreach community clinics within a 2-hour radius of Main Campus. The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare professionals and ensuring the smooth operation of medical facilities. This position involves a combination of administrative and clinical tasks to provide comprehensive patient care. This position’s main location will be our Iowa River Landing/Outpatient Clinic and will primarily travel to other surrounding Outreach community clinics and Main Campus clinic to provide additional support. Schedule will primarily support Outreach community clinics but will be variable to change based on patient care demands. Requirements

  • Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant program; OR Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program (including but not limited to): pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology, and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet University Fleet Safety Program requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience providing direct patient care in, or demonstrated knowledge of, cardiovascular services.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manage internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment. (These are medications that can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.)
  • Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work, does electrocardiograms and x-ray work as needed.
  • Identify vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Perform related clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing information to other departments.
  • Assist in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.
  • Partner with nursing staff to ensure timely, thorough clinic work up and follow up including calls to patients (post procedure, normal test results, fasting, appointment reminders, etc.), preparation of patient education materials and packets, monitoring of fax machine and distribution of faxes, obtain outside records/labs, and obtain pre-authorization.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Technicians across clinic/specialty to ensure optimal patient experience and efficient clinic flow.
  • Participate in huddles to address issues and plan upcoming clinics.
  • Demonstrate accountability for patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in discharge planning process to ensure continuity of care and appropriate identification of primary provider.
  • Alters work schedule to meet clinic and/or patient needs.
  • May be required to travel to other clinics as needed to meet business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
