About The Position

The Medical Assistant II Podiatry will adhere to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, follow all policies and procedures, and maintain training and competency based on the area of specialty when providing patient care. This role performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings. The Medical Assistant II will assist the provider with or perform procedures as ordered, and handle lab-related duties including venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking. They will also perform Point of Care testing (POCT) and complete Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing. Administration of medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration is also a key responsibility. Other duties may include medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals. The role requires demonstrating effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation. Maintaining a clean work environment, ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately, and ensuring equipment and supplies are in working order and areas are appropriately stocked are also essential. This position may assist with training and onboarding of other teammates and may serve as a role champion or on a committee. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, understanding the principles of growth and development over the life span and possessing the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required
• Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas.
• Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
• Demonstrates professional practice advancement through professional governance, safety coach, super-user, vaccine coordinator, SPICE or OSHA/IP certificate holder for unit
• Achieves 6 points from the list of additional market responsibilities
• Current Medical Assistant certification from one of the following is required: CMA from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), CCMA from National Health career Association (NHA), NCMA from National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), RMA from American Medical Technologists (AMT), RMA from American Allied Health, NCMSMA from National Healthcare Worker’s Association (NHCWA), NRCMA from National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), NRMA from National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA)
• Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
• Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
• Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
• Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.
• Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
• Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance.
• For patient lifts over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other team member, when available.
• Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case- by -case basis.
• Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.
• Will be exposed to the following hazards on a frequent basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids.
• Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
• Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

• Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
• Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
• Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
• Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
