About The Position

The Medical Assistant II - Outpatient Psych role is within The General Hospital Corporation Mass General Brigham, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to patient care, research, teaching, and community service. This position supports providers in the innovative and dynamic MGH Team-based Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic (TOP), which serves the mental health needs of patients under the care of MGH primary care physicians. The clinic operates with three teams, each comprising a psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse practitioner, social worker, and a medical assistant.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Direct MA experience or medical field work: 2-3 years required.
  • Ability to take vital signs and manual blood pressure, as well as collect blood samples and other specimens.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical office software.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others.

Nice To Haves

  • CCMA highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates actively in patient care, including obtaining chief complaint and vital signs, completing pertinent screening, and ensuring proper identification and handling of sensitive information.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills concerning appropriate documentation of allergies, medication updates, past medical history, and any other information added to the medical record.
  • Manages the flow of the provider’s patient care session, makes decisions to add patients to the schedule as needed, and keeps the provider informed about issues affecting care efficiency.
  • Provides medication and overdose education to patients and families as directed by the prescriber and within the scope of the MA’s practice.
  • Supports patient care and the healthcare team by anticipating administrative functions, including preparing prior authorizations, monitoring clinical messaging, supporting providers with patient follow-up letters, and updating the medical record under provider guidance.
  • Monitors and stocks supplies for the clinical and administrative needs of the practice.
  • Transports/escorts patients in the hospital as needed.
  • Provides cross-coverage for the patient services coordinator role as needed, such as scheduling appointments, answering phones, managing messages, and other managed care related issues (only if out of office).
  • Maintains an orderly practice environment, including properly disinfecting exam rooms between visits.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to excellence in safety, care, and service with a strong orientation toward outstanding customer service.
  • Participates in medical team meetings, rounds, and case conferences to provide education, consultation, and information exchange to improve patient care.
  • Assists with patient faxes, RX refills, and pharmacy requests.
  • Monitors and manages the Epic in-basket/pools.
  • Completes insurance verification and benefit reviews prior to any rendered services.
  • Appropriately documents insurance information, including benefits and prior approvals, in the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy consistent with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Maintains an organized and neat work area.
  • Works collaboratively with patients, staff, clinicians, and managers to determine needs and solve problems.
  • Follows hospital and department standards regarding telephone courtesy and etiquette.
  • Maintains accurate knowledge of hospital policies and ensures adherence to all recommended procedures.
