About The Position

The Medical Assistant I (MA) in the Endocrinology Clinic plays a crucial role in patient care by adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice and following all policies and procedures. This role involves performing essential patient visit tasks, assisting providers with procedures, managing laboratory duties, administering medications and vaccines, and contributing to various administrative and clinical support functions. The MA must demonstrate effective communication, teamwork, and maintain a clean and well-stocked work environment. A key aspect of this role is the ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT.
OR 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (or to be obtained within 45 days for IL/WI Divisions and Floyd & Navicent).
Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.
Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance.
Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.
Will be exposed to the following hazards on a frequent basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids.
Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Allied Health (AAH), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Health Career Association (NHA), (MCMA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA) Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (Wake Forest).

Responsibilities

Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
Cross trained to perform duties that are relevant to specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant.
Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
