About The Position

The Medical Assistant I, Certified provides routine clinical and administrative support to providers and other health care team members in an outpatient clinic setting. The role works under a provider’s clinical supervision for patient care activities and under the general direction of the designated manager or supervisor for non-clinical responsibilities. The position is with the UNC Hospitals Rheumatology Specialty Clinic at Eastowne, which provides care for adult patients with common and rare rheumatologic diseases, including complex and difficult-to-diagnose conditions. It is an onsite role at 100 Eastowne Drive, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no weekends or holidays. The role is full-time at 40 hours per week. A $7,500 commitment incentive is paid in three equal installments at 12, 24, and 36 months. The stated hiring salary range is $18.48 to $25.89 per hour; offers are determined by experience and internal equity.

Requirements

Medical Assistant certification from AAMA, AMT, NHA (CCMA), NAHP (NRCMA), or NCCT (NCMA).
Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to engage positively with patients and families and work as part of a team with staff and providers.
Ability to use a computer to document required information in the electronic medical record.

Nice To Haves

Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred but not required.
Prior medical assistant or medical assistant externship experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs rooming and intake, collecting vital signs, height, weight, and information related to the patient’s reason for visit.
Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
Reviews the patient’s current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy.
Assists the provider during treatments, examinations, and procedures as directed.
Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
Administers medications under a provider’s direction.
Performs tests, such as EKGs and eye exams, under a provider’s direction.
Reviews the patient record to determine whether routine health screenings are needed.
Ensures the exam or procedure room has appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials ready for use.
Provides after-visit, follow-up, self-care, or procedural instructions and educational materials as directed.
Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
Assists with patient registration, check-in and check-out, appointment scheduling, scheduling tests and treatments, and referrals.
Answers the clinic telephone and assists with the in-basket under the direction of a provider or nurse.
Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.
