Medical Assistant Externship
About The Position
This is a 6-week paid externship program designed for individuals currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant Program. The program offers the opportunity to apply Medical Assistant knowledge and skills in a real clinical environment, assisting physicians, PAs, or NPs in the urgent care setting. Participants will engage in a variety of day-to-day activities, including triage, answering phones, taking medical histories, and performing lab work. The externship focuses on developing confidence, efficiency, and accuracy in patient care, providing exposure to daily clinic workflows and patient flow management, and strengthening communication, teamwork, and professionalism. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate readiness for entry-level Medical Assistant employment.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program
- 1-2 letters of recommendation of endorsement from accredited Medical Assistant Program supervisor or lead
- Ability to perform venipuncture.
Nice To Haves
- BLS/CPR certification preferred
Responsibilities
- Apply Medical Assistant knowledge and skills in a real clinical environment, assisting the Physician, PA, or NP in support of medical care of urgent care patients.
- Perform selected medical assisting and administrative duties.
- Perform direct patient care as instructed by the Physician, PA, or NP.
- Perform lab tests as directed by the Physician, PA, or NP.
- Prepare patients for examination and treatment. Take patient histories and vital signs.
- Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
- Administer injections and apply dressings as instructed.
- Distribute medications as directed by Physician, PA, or NP.
- Prepare and maintain supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
- Assist provider in preparing for minor surgeries and exams.
- Assist with scheduling of tests and treatments.
- Maintain equipment for use at all times, in a clean and safe condition.
- Make suggestions to improve work methods.
