About The Position

We are seeking a Medical Assistant, Certified in our Duke Spine and Pain Management located in Raleigh, NC to be an integral member of the healthcare team to provide direct and indirect care to patients. Duke Health Integrated Practice comprises more than 110 primary and specialty outpatient clinics, extending the reach of Duke Health's mission across the state of North Carolina.

Requirements

  • High school or GED graduation required.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required.
  • BLS required.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Takes medical histories and records vital signs.
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients and prepares them for examinations and procedures.
  • Assists the medical and nursing staff during examination and procedures.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens.
  • Performs basic laboratory tests in the clinic/office.
  • Takes electrocardiograms.
  • Removes sutures/staples.
  • Changes sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Promotes patient/family understanding of educational content and their involvement in the plan of care.
  • Documents in the patient record.
  • Disposes of contaminated supplies.
  • Performs instrument processing, high level disinfection and sterilization of medical instruments.
  • Telephones prescriptions to a pharmacy.
  • Prepares and administers medications as directed by a physician.
  • Authorizes drug refills as directed.
  • Performs other clinical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician.
  • Greets patients, answers telephones, schedules appointments, and checks out patients.
  • Arranges for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Updates and files patient medical records.
  • Fills out insurance forms.
  • Handles billing, bookkeeping, including receiving copays and collections on account balances.
  • Handles correspondence.
  • Orders clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
  • Performs other administrative duties as directed.
  • May be requested to be a liaison for clinic activities such as Joint Commission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees.
