About The Position

Your job is more than a job. This role involves providing comprehensive patient care within a cardiology clinic, encompassing customer service, patient throughput, performance improvement, direct patient care, safety and infection control, and clerical support. The Medical Assistant will prepare patients for visits, collect vital signs and medical history, administer treatments and medications under physician direction, and maintain organized and safe exam rooms. Communication with patients, pharmacies, and other medical personnel is a key aspect, as is accurate documentation in the patient's medical record. The role also includes performing specialty-specific testing and minor procedures under supervision, monitoring patient status, and responding to changes requiring physician attention.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent or 2 years of appropriate work experience.
  • American Association of Medical Assistants - Certified Medical Assistant OR National Healthcareer Association - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant OR Certified Medical Assistant - NPCE OR American Heart Association - Basic Life Support Health Care Provider OR Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) OR NCCT Certification for Medical Assistants
  • Clinical skills: vital signs, documentation, specimen labeling and transport, medication administration, computer skills.
  • Communication and Guest Relations Skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patient for office visit by collecting vital signs, pain rating, allergies, and reason for visit, prior to being seen by physician.
  • Assess each patient for Abuse, Fall Risk, Functional Assessment, Advance Directives prior to being seen by the physician.
  • Record allergies, vital signs, reason for visit, current medications, and social and past medical history, Abuse, Fall Risk, Functional Assessment, Advance Directives in patient record’s medical record.
  • Obtain patient tests prior to/or after seeing the physician.
  • Discuss plan of care with physician before, during and following patient visit.
  • Administer treatments at the direction of the physician and document and submit charges as required.
  • Under the direction of a registered nurse, administer prescribed medications and/or vaccines via ordered route in accordance with department policy.
  • Consider patient growth and development and use proper technique for infant, toddler, school-aged, adolescent, young adult, and adult patients.
  • Clean and reorganize exam room after visit.
  • Communicate with patients, pharmacies, hospitals, and other medical related personnel.
  • Communicate information between patients and physician regarding labs/test results, medications, appointments, etc.
  • Communicate with pharmacies regarding patient medication refills and new prescriptions.
  • Record all communication in patient record.
  • Sort and distribute correspondence, test results, and scan in patient medical record, after physician review and sign off.
  • Complete assigned tasks timely.
  • Prepare patient and room for procedures performed in office.
  • Provide privacy and instruction to patient pre and post procedure.
  • Obtain specimen, complete appropriate paperwork, and deliver specimen to designated location.
  • Apply supportive devices or bandages as ordered by physician and document appropriate information in patient’s record.
  • Document and submit charges in patient record.
  • Stock treatment rooms and keep supplies organized.
  • Stock exam rooms at least weekly with frequently used items.
  • Keep supplies/linens organized, monitor supplies/linens to assure adequate supply and advise nurse of supplies in low supply.
  • Monitor equipment and surgical instruments.
  • Package, label and send surgical instruments to central sterilization as needed.
  • Ensure used instruments are cleaned daily.
  • Inspect equipment to ensure it is operating properly and report equipment needing repairs promptly to Nurse or clinic/office Manager.
  • Update Recommendations (health maintenance) as needed in the patient’s medical record.
  • Check Quality Assurance logs to aid in maintaining quality patient care.
  • Check Refrigerator logs daily.
  • Participate in all scheduled clinic preparation processes by gathering appropriate clinical documentation for review by the medical provider / licensed independent practitioner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all equipment including computers, printers, scanners & fax machines.
  • Obtain medical records from outside facilities when needed or requested by medical provider.
  • Scan outside correspondence into the appropriate area of the electronic medical record.
  • Answer the telephone and route calls promptly to the appropriate person.
  • Accept and perform other assigned duties essential to the efficient operation of the clinic and/or Division of Ambulatory Services.
  • Perform specialty specific testing and/or minor procedures under the direct supervision of the physician or registered nurse.
  • Upon evaluation of the clinical presentation and individual needs of the patient, the MAII may modify the testing procedure as per protocol established.
  • Provide initial patient screening during an in-office procedure or test.
  • Monitor patient for changes including blood pressure, heart rate, rhythm, signs and symptoms.
  • Understand the importance of these changes and when they require immediate physician attention.
