About The Position

Under the supervision of the Ambulatory Care Patient Supervisor and Administrative Manager, and guided by the policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services Organization, the Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of care to patients in the UCSF Endocrine Practice. General responsibilities include managing patient flow, obtaining vital signs, reviewing health maintenance status, maintaining and stocking exam rooms, and assisting in emergencies. The Medical Assistant also supports general administrative functions at reception, including scheduling, referral management, and other duties as required, demonstrating excellent customer service skills with patients and staff. The Medical Assistant must be able to competently work in an advanced Electronic Health Record environment and comply with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards.

Requirements

  • One to two years’ experience as a Medical Assistant in a high-volume clinical practice
  • Active American Heart Association CPR certification
  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program
  • Strong computer skills, including basic keyboarding skills
  • Ability to prioritize and work efficiently with multiple forms of patient & provider communication
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong writing skills to include the ability to compose basic office communications
  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with team physicians and referring physicians

Responsibilities

  • Monitors patient flow in and out of the clinic.
  • Supports the medication reconciliation process.
  • Performs routine clinical functions, including but not limited to vital signs, height, weight, and assessment of chief complaints.
  • Handles phone calls and reviews messages, documenting medication requests and prepares appropriate documentation for clinicians.
  • Assists patients in preparation for exam or procedures.
  • Reports any problems or concerns with individual patients to the Practice Manager or attending provider.
  • Performs clinical activities in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Effectively works in an advanced Electronic Health Record environment.
  • Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice.
  • Complies with activities mandated by TJC / Title 22.
  • Completes annual competency testing.
  • Processes prior medication authorization requests.
  • Able to perform POCT and Glucometer testing and maintains annual competency.
  • Answers calls and demonstrates courtesy and follow-through in all telephone communication.
  • Maintains Medical Center Telephone Standards.
  • Follows clinic protocols to screen, triage, and respond to patient messages via UCSF patient communication portal.
  • Supports clinicians with inBasket messages.
  • Follows HIPAA for patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assists providers with lab or clinic forms and other requisitions as appropriate.
  • Schedules patients in Cadence.
  • Assists with patient discharge from practice, including scheduling follow-up appointments, tests, and procedures, and providing directions.
  • Coordinates patient check-out and referrals.
  • Fills in at reception in check-in/check-out roles on an as-needed basis.
  • Supports practice for data input and PI projects.
  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly, and clutter-free, including hallways.
  • Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong.
  • Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout the facility.
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in the department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
  • Performs any other duties related to patient care activities as required.
