Media Firmware Development Engineer

Solidigm•Rancho Cordova, CA
•$128,960 - $201,500

About The Position

In this position you will join a fast-paced team developing new, cutting-edge firmware for Solidigm Solid State Drives (SSD). You will utilize and grow your experience in embedded architecture, external interfaces, and product constraints, along with the ability to develop architectures/features that meet these constraints while providing new value for the platform. You will use and gain experience in storage interface standards such as NVMe, PCIe, SATA, and SAS. The team utilizes Agile development methodologies, therefore, excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with team members, both locally and across the organization is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in developing, validating, or optimizing embedded firmware for SSDs or other NAND flash–based storage products.
  • 7+ years of experience with SSD architecture and relevant industry standards and interfaces, such as NVMe, PCIe, NAND interfaces, error correction, and flash translation layer (FTL) design.
  • 7+ years of experience in debugging and root-causing complex firmware issues on pre-production and production hardware, including failure triage, log and telemetry analysis, and driving issues to closure across firmware, hardware, and validation teams.
  • 7+ years of C/C++ development in an embedded environment, using standard development and debug tooling such as Git, Python, and C/C++ debuggers.

Nice To Haves

  • Media management for NAND flash, including data placement, wear leveling, garbage collection, defect management, and endurance or reliability optimization.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and debugging firmware algorithms that improve latency, throughput, and performance consistency under sustained real-world workloads.
  • Experience analyzing drive-level performance and telemetry data to identify bottlenecks and translating findings into firmware or media-management improvements.
  • Experience bringing up, characterizing, or qualifying new NAND generations and translating media characterization results into firmware policy improvements.
  • Experience developing data-driven media-management algorithms that optimize SSD performance, endurance, reliability, and quality of service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team across multiple sites.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, document, and maintain product source code in C/C++
  • Analyze and develop firmware per internal and external (customer) specifications
  • Perform unit and system level testing including failure analysis and debug of product issues as part of development and validation phases
  • Develop low-level firmware, system architectures, operating systems, device architectures, in partnership with hardware and ASIC design teams
  • Cross multiple firmware disciplines to develop and grow across the entire SSD architecture
  • Work with project stakeholders turning product requirements into development and validation plans
  • Participating in and role modeling an Agile/Kanban development culture which emphasizes product quality, team accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Coordinate priorities and activities with other engineering stakeholders to accomplish committed milestones
