About The Position

Med Techs provide routine assistance care in a manner conducive to the comfort and safety of residents in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations. They are delegated the responsibility for carrying out assigned duties by the LPN Charge Nurse, Assisted Living Administrator, or other assigned supervisory personnel to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times. This role involves managing medications, ensuring proper labeling and storage, handling prescription and OTC medications, and maintaining accurate documentation. Med Techs also supervise self-administration of medications and are responsible for reporting emergencies, changes in resident condition, accidents, incidents, complaints, and grievances.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed an approved Med Tech training course and be certified in this state.
  • Six months experience working in a nursing home, hospital, home health agency, or other health care facility.
  • Ability to communicate with others.
  • Do not pose a direct threat to the safety or health of self or others.
  • Ability to work in an environment conducive to caring for residents without posing a direct threat to self or others.
  • Capable of lifting a minimum of forty pounds.
  • Able to perform essential physical tasks without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of him/herself or others, including residents/patients, co-workers, and others.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred minimum educational background of having a high school diploma or GED equivalency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide routine assistance care in a manner conducive to the comfort and safety of residents.
  • Maintain all medications ordered by the health care provider in a locked, central storage.
  • Ensure all medications meet the 8 mandated labeling requirements.
  • Manage resident requests for OTC items to be kept in their room for unsupervised use, including notifying the physician and obtaining necessary orders.
  • Properly handle and label samples/complimentary medications.
  • Indicate specific reasons and frequency for PRN medications.
  • Implement medication change orders once written documentation is received.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all medications on a monthly medication observation record.
  • Ensure prescriptions are refilled in a timely manner, ordering a 7-day emergency supply if necessary and allocating costs to the responsible party.
  • Maintain all residents’ rights and 5 medication rights with all medication management interventions.
  • Supervise self-administration of medications as ordered by the health care provider.
  • Effectively report emergencies such as residents’/patient’s condition changes, accidents, incidents, complaints, and grievances.
