About The Position

This position involves administering medications to residents following facility policies and procedures. The Med Tech will be responsible for noting and reporting medication errors, assisting in the development of error prevention programs, and maintaining accurate records. The role requires collaboration with various healthcare professionals and participation in quality assurance initiatives to ensure the safe and accurate administration of medications. The Med Tech must verify resident identity, accurately document vital signs, and adhere to all facility policies regarding medication handling, documentation, and resident self-administration.

Requirements

  • High school education or its equivalent.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be a licensed Medication Aide.
  • Must have successfully completed a state-approved training program for Medication Aides.
  • Must have successfully completed any necessary examinations in accordance with state laws.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Prolonged use of a desk top or laptop computer.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand; walk and talk, read or hear.
  • Frequent use of all office related equipment to include; copier/scanner/fax, telephone, and calculator.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relative to the administration of medications as used by the facility, pharmacists, and physicians.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in your profession, as well as to maintain your certification on a current status.

Responsibilities

  • Administer oral and/or topical medications accurately and safely.
  • Document the administration of medications, including any instances where medication is not administered and the reasons for refusal.
  • Note and report medication errors and reactions promptly to the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services.
  • Assist in developing and implementing procedures to prevent medication errors.
  • Maintain accurate records, including completing necessary forms, charts, and reports.
  • Collaborate with the nursing department, physicians, Medical Director, and pharmacists.
  • Report resident complaints or grievances to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in facility surveys and quality assurance programs.
  • Verify that medications brought in by newly admitted residents are examined and identified.
  • Follow facility policies for destroying medications and documenting the process.
  • Ensure all medications are properly labeled.
  • Follow facility procedures for charting medications.
  • Assist in documenting and removing discontinued medications.
  • Follow procedures for drug receipt errors, including notification and documentation.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report resident vital signs.
  • Follow facility procedures for resident self-administration of medications.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information and report any suspected violations.
  • Report any suspected unauthorized attempts to access the facility's information system.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Follow work assignments and schedules.
  • Cooperate with inter-departmental and facility personnel.
