About The Position

This position is accountable to perform clerical duties, act as a unit receptionist, coordinate unit/patient activities with other departments via proper use of the computer and telephone, and maintain an orderly and efficient nursing station. The role also involves providing, under the supervision of the RN, accurate recognition of cardiac rhythms by viewing the cardiac monitor, running cardiac strips, measuring intervals, identifying rhythms, and maintaining telemetry records. The unit clerk responsibilities include facilitating patient admissions and discharges, managing patient information in the EHR, and coordinating with various departments for patient care needs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • BLS for healthcare providers required.
  • Previous unit clerk and monitor tech experience necessary.
  • Basic cardiac monitoring interpretation experience and/or proof of education.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, proper grammar, and spelling.
  • Computer literate.
  • Professional customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical duties and act as a unit receptionist.
  • Coordinate unit/patient activities with other departments.
  • Maintain an orderly and efficient nursing station.
  • Provide accurate recognition of cardiac rhythms by viewing the cardiac monitor.
  • Run cardiac strips every four hours and as needed for changes in baseline.
  • Measure PR, QRS, and QT intervals.
  • Identify cardiac rhythms.
  • Print and interpret ECG telemetry strips.
  • Initial cardiac rhythm strips and mount them in the telemetry binder.
  • Transfer cardiac rhythm strips upon patient discharge.
  • Perform all responsibilities/duties required by the unit as defined in the scope of service, addressing the unique nature of the client, including age.
  • Differentiate between subtle ECG changes that signify benign problems or life-threatening situations and report immediately to the RN.
  • Print strips, notify the nurse, and document date, time, and name of RN notified when ECG changes are noted.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of the physiology of the heart.
  • Determine whether a rhythm change requires immediate notification of the RN.
  • Communicate daily with personnel from all departments for scheduling diagnostic tests and treatments, ordering diets, and requisitioning medical supplies.
  • Be familiar with standard operating procedures in ancillary departments to schedule diagnostic tests and treatments without conflict.
  • Communicate daily with physicians, nurses, visitors, and patients.
  • Communicate externally with outside resources to coordinate patient transition of care.
  • Assist with clerical needs as requested by physicians.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate documentation.
  • Facilitate the proper documentation of the patient care system from pre-admission through discharge.
  • Assure accurate patient location on EHR.
  • Admit/discharge patients from EHR.
  • Maintain Admit/Discharge Log.
  • Update Charge RN of patient census.
  • Assist with patient equipment tracking, rental, and order replacements.
  • Track telemetry monitors at the change of shift and follow up on any missing devices.

Benefits

  • 15% will be added to the hourly rate in lieu of benefits due to 'per diem' status.
