About The Position

This position is responsible for performing and overseeing the performance of routine procedures and preventive maintenance in the Hematology section, while ensuring quality assurance and quality control follow laboratory standards and the laboratory policy manual. This position will also be required to rotate through all other areas of the laboratory, working alone on non-routine shifts and weekends. These areas include Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Therapeutic drug monitoring/Toxicology, Immunology/Serology, Point of Care testing, EKG, Phlebotomy, Microbiology, Reference, and general office duties. Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF). With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the hospital provides help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. The hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory; or Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check
  • Complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation
  • Adhere to the facility's Vaccination Policy
  • Subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal record background checks

Nice To Haves

  • Experience monitoring laboratory results in a health care setting
  • Experience working in a clinical Hematology section
  • Experience troubleshooting quality control issues
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology
  • ASCP Certification

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshooting laboratory equipment
  • Interpreting and reporting laboratory results
  • Ensuring daily, weekly, and monthly quality control are within laboratory acceptable limits
  • Providing diagnostic data to clients and physicians at Broughton Hospital and the outreach clients of Western NC
  • Training personnel to comply with regulatory agencies
  • Possible couriering duties may be included with this job
