About The Position

This position involves performing level II carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings, as well as fabricating and repairing various wooden articles and equipment. The role requires completing a wide range of tasks using established carpentry, cabinetry, countertops, and furniture trade practices, from start to finish construction. Responsibilities include designing, building, repairing, and installing custom cabinetry, countertops, and furniture to meet specific facility requests. The position also includes concrete and masonry related tasks, and other trades work assignments, which may be accompanied by sketches, specifications, work orders, or oral instructions. The employee is expected to perform work in accordance with established trade practices, with new or unusual assignments guided by detailed drawings or oral instructions. Difficult problems are resolved through discussion with a foreman, and work quality is reviewed by a superior. Broughton Hospital, where this position is located, is one of three regional psychiatric hospitals under the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF) within the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It provides help and support to North Carolinians experiencing mental illness, serving the western thirty-seven counties of North Carolina.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check
  • Ability to complete and pass BLS/CPR training during orientation
  • Ability to complete and pass Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation
  • Ability to report or stay over during adverse weather events (Mandatory Position)
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of experience in the construction or remodeling of wooden structures or in furniture repair or construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug testing
  • Ability to pass criminal record background checks
  • Adherence to the facility's Vaccination Policy

  • Documented knowledge of new construction and/or building renovation practices
  • Documented knowledge of carpentry trade related tools and materials
  • Adequate knowledge of the building/renovation practices including established methods of carpentry trade
  • Possess common knowledge of tools and materials required for tasks
  • Ability to follow written, sketched or verbal instructions
  • Ability to assist Facility Engineering as requested with a wide range of associated tasks

Responsibilities

  • Perform level II carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings
  • Fabricate and repair a variety of wooden articles and equipment
  • Complete a wide variety of work assignments using established carpentry, cabinetry, countertops and furniture trade practices from start to finish construction
  • Design, build, repair and install custom cabinetry, countertops and furniture to meet specific facility requests
  • Perform concrete and masonry related tasks
  • Receive and complete other trades work assignments from the supervisor, usually accompanied by sketches, specifications, work orders or oral instructions
  • Perform work in accordance with established trade practices
  • Resolve irregular or difficult work problems through discussion with the foreman
