About The Position

AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected. We are seeking a Mechanisms Engineer to support the design, development, and optimization of precision mechanical systems for advanced aerospace applications. This role will contribute to both new product development and ongoing improvements, ensuring successful delivery of hardware from concept through integration and testing. The ideal candidate is hands-on, innovative, and thrives in a fast-paced environment, collaborating cross-functionally to bring complex mechanical systems from design to deployment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably involving complex systems or hardware development
  • Experience with industry-standard 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or similar)
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis methods (e.g., FEA)
  • Experience with PLM/PDM systems
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Additional experience in aerospace, space systems, or other high-performance environments
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary systems involving electrical or software components
  • Experience supporting hardware through full lifecycle (design to testing and delivery)

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems and mechanisms, including performing analysis and trade studies to optimize performance, efficiency, and manufacturability
  • Execute detailed engineering design work in accordance with established standards, procedures, and program requirements
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support system integration, assembly, and testing activities
  • Partner with external vendors by defining requirements, reviewing designs, and tracking development progress
  • Develop and maintain mechanical documentation, including requirements, drawings, interface definitions, and test procedures
  • Define and validate mechanical interfaces between subsystems and components
  • Support qualification testing (e.g., vibration, thermal, environmental) and evaluate results
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
  • Present technical findings and design updates during reviews with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Identify and implement process improvements, new technologies, or innovative design approaches
