Mechanical Tool Design Engineers

Quest Defense Systems & Solutions, Inc.•Cincinnati, OH
•$67,000 - $75,000•Onsite

About The Position

Quest Defense Systems and Solutions is hiring Mechanical Tool Design Engineers to design and develop production tooling, fixtures, and machining aids for turbomachinery manufacturing and repair. The role uses Siemens NX, CAD modeling, GD&T, and mechanical design principles to translate engineering drawings and requirements into practical tooling solutions that improve manufacturing accuracy, quality, and efficiency. The position is onsite in Cincinnati, Ohio, and relocation assistance is available. U.S. citizenship is required, along with the ability to obtain or already hold an active security clearance. The engineer interprets engineering and manufacturing documents, performs shop-math calculations, applies stress-analysis results, and designs production, engineering, and developmental tools for machining, fabrication, and processing. The role coordinates tooling concepts and changes with Tool Engineers and Product Definition Engineers, assists shop personnel with tooling drawings, and records manufacturing data. Candidates need a relevant engineering degree or commensurate experience, CAD and NX proficiency, and at least three years of experience applying GD&T to tooling fixture design and fabrication. The compensation range is $67,000–$75,000, with the full package based on experience and certifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or commensurate years of experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design and modeling using NX.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering documents, sketches, drawings, blueprints, engineering models, conceptual designs, and verbal discussions.
  • At least three years of experience interpreting and applying GD&T to support tooling fixture design and fabrication processes.
  • Ability to apply machining theory, best practices, mechanical systems, welding, and assembly to tooling design for turbomachinery repair and manufacturing.
  • Understanding of product tolerance stack-ups and datum structures and their application to tooling fixture design.
  • Excellent math skills, particularly shop math such as trigonometry.
  • Behaviors reflecting the company’s Safety Values and understanding of factory process safety rules and requirements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to interact with employees and managers at all levels.
  • Ability to contribute effectively as part of a team and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to discuss, comprehend, and adhere to established or agreed-upon tooling-design budgets.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Department of Defense clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience adopting or integrating emerging technologies, such as generative AI, automation platforms, or digital assistants, into day-to-day operations for continuous improvement.
  • Already holding an active security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret conceptual designs, drawings, blueprints, engineering orders, sketches, tool orders, manuals, charts, and graphs to create tool designs using drafting techniques and computer-based design or drafting systems.
  • Perform shop-math calculations, including geometric and trigonometric formulas, to determine dimensions, angles, contours, surfaces, reference lines, center points, and machining guidelines.
  • Understand and apply results from stress analysis.
  • Design production, engineering, and developmental tools for machining, fabrication, and processing, accounting for the working properties and machining characteristics of metals, plastics, ceramics, and composite materials.
  • Coordinate tool requisitions, design concepts, changes, modifications, and requirements with Tool Engineers.
  • Coordinate with Product Definition Engineers on tool requisitions and design changes to ensure modifications meet requirements.
  • Assist shop personnel in understanding tool design drawings as needed.
  • Record manufacturing data and statistics manually or using computer-based systems.
  • Review, interpret, and upgrade legacy tooling designs to modern standards, applications, and practices.
  • Discuss, understand, and adhere to agreed tooling-design budgets for models and drawings.
