Mechanical Test Engineer I

RTX•Tucson, AZ
•$57,200 - $108,800•Onsite

About The Position

Join Raytheon's dynamic Test Solutions Engineering team, part of the Hardware Discipline Center, where we architect and deliver high-reliability test equipment vital to national defense. In this role, you will design, analyze, prototype, and implement advanced mechanical test fixtures and environmental test stations supporting complex weapon systems across their entire lifecycle—from early engineering development and high-rate factory production to field operations and long-term sustainment. Occasional CONUS travel to customer sites or suppliers is generally required. International and longer-duration travel assignments are available but optional.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline. Degree must be obtained by start date.
  • Experience utilizing parametric 3D CAD software (such as SolidWorks, PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, or Siemens NX) to generate 3D solid models, mechanical assemblies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
  • Experience in mechanical design applied through coursework, academic research, engineering competition teams (e.g., Formula SAE, Baja, Robotics), or hands-on projects.
  • Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain INTERIM U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Knowledge or application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles per ASME/ANSI Y14.5.
  • Hands-on experience in rapid prototyping and mechanical fabrication, including additive manufacturing (3D printing via FDM, SLA, or SLS) or machine shop equipment (mills, lathes, drill presses, or CNC equipment).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving aptitude applied to structural, thermal, or multi-disciplinary hardware challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Research, plan, and design custom mechanical test solutions for vibration, thermal, hydraulic, radio frequency (RF), and electro-optical operational environments.
  • Conceptualize and implement mechanical systems that integrate seamlessly with state-of-the-art test technologies.
  • Utilize parametric CAD solid modeling tools to create comprehensive 3D assemblies and detailed 2D engineering drawing packages.
  • Ensure all technical data packages adhere strictly to industry drafting standards, including ASME Y14 series or ISO geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Integrate and validate test systems against stringent accuracy, repeatability, and reliability requirements.
  • Evaluate production installations and collaborate with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams to diagnose malfunctions and implement design enhancements.
