Amentum is NASA’s largest engineering solutions provider working together with NASA at centers across the United States. They have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Systems Technician I to join the team. This is a JETS II CBA position with Amentum. The Mechanical Systems Technician I will perform quality work in the development, fabrication, calibration, setup, operation, and maintenance of laboratory fixtures, equipment, and facilities. They will assist in the fabrication, modification, and assembly of various complex hardware and systems from engineer drawings, sketches, or verbal and written instructions. They will also assist in the building and operating complex mechanical systems and equipment within the functional scope of assigned group/section including, but not limited to, pressure (liquid/vapor/gas), vacuum, cryogenic, hydraulic, pneumatic, vibration, and acoustic test equipment and systems. The role involves interpreting engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions, and working directly with engineering personnel and/or higher level technicians on the design, fabrication, installation, and operation of components and special systems. The technician will assist in the preparation of various reports and documentation, operate forklift and man-lift equipment, and work at elevated locations using systems/equipment such as ladders, man-lifts, and scaffolding. They will operate appropriate shop mechanical equipment, systems, and tools, and perform tasks such as cutting, flaring, threading, and bending tubing and pipe. Cleaning hardware and components to the appropriate level, performing testing and leak checking of vacuum and pressure systems, and assisting in the operation of mechanical systems through a data and controls computer interface are also key responsibilities. The role includes maintaining equipment, assisting in the test, calibration, adjustment, repair, and set up of test or research oriented equipment or experiments, and executing all work duties in a skilled, safe, and technically acceptable manner with technical guidance. Identifying and correcting potential hazards, maintaining a neat and orderly work area, and assisting more experienced technicians are also part of the role. The technician will work shifts assigned to duty stations as a test system operator or trainee under guidance/supervision. This position requires the ability to follow written and verbal instructions, assist with the work of others, and be familiar with basic mechanical equipment and systems and concepts, practices, and procedures within the assigned work area. A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
