About The Position

Jefferson County is seeking an experienced Mechanical & Plumbing Inspector to join our Building Safety Division. This role involves conducting technical inspections to ensure construction and building systems comply with applicable codes, approved plans, and permit requirements. The inspector will review blueprints, evaluate work in the field, document deficiencies, and issue correction notices or stop-work orders as needed. This position also involves explaining inspection findings and code requirements to various stakeholders, responding to complaints, and conducting follow-up inspections. The role offers the opportunity to work independently in the field while also being part of a collaborative team, conducting inspections in diverse locations throughout Jefferson County.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of work-related experience as an inspector (or equivalent position in another jurisdiction) and in one or more construction trades.
  • P1 – Residential Plumbing Inspector & P2 – Commercial Plumbing Inspector (or) Journeyman/Master Plumber License.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new procedures, technologies, codes, and inspection practices.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry and the ability to learn inspection and recordkeeping systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years of combined experience, including: two years as an inspector (or equivalent position in another jurisdiction), and three years of experience in one or more construction trades.
  • M1 & M2 Certifications
  • Experience with the AMANDA database or something similar.
  • Experience working with both residential and commercial construction is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting field inspections throughout the County, including mechanical, plumbing, and general building safety inspections as assigned.
  • Ensuring compliance with the applicable adopted building codes.
  • Reviewing approved plans, blueprints, diagrams, and other construction documents.
  • Explaining code requirements, product installation requirements, and technical standards to contractors, property owners, design professionals, and members of the public.
  • Identifying code violations and construction deficiencies and issuing correction notices, stop-work orders, and other required enforcement documentation.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete inspection records, reports, forms, photographs, and other documentation associated with field inspections and enforcement activities.
  • Providing field training and guidance to customers and contractors regarding construction procedures, inspection requirements, and code interpretations.
  • Testifying in court when a situation requires.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
