About The Position

Turner Industries is seeking a Mechanical Planner I to join their Project Controls Team and be placed at a jobsite in the Whiting, IN area. As a Mechanical Planner, you will be responsible for planning Maintenance, Turnarounds, Small Capital Projects, or a combination of these. This role requires relevant experience with equipment, piping, structural steel, and light civil work. Your responsibilities will include walking down job scope requests, estimating labor hours for multiple disciplines, developing work plans, and creating job plan packages. This is a senior-level position with an expectation to mentor and coach junior teammates.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of field planning experience in any combination of industrial maintenance, capital projects and/or outages and turnarounds
  • Four (4) years of jobsite mechanical craft experience or BS degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related curriculum
  • Strong background in piping and/or structural work scope planning
  • Ability to estimate material and labor quantities from industrial construction drawings for multiple craft disciplines
  • Proficient in computer-based MS programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to climb and build planning packages from elevated structures
  • Ability to lead Interactive Planning Sessions thus bridging Field Supervision and Project Controls buy in to the Pre Execution development of Schedule and Cost deliverables

Nice To Haves

  • NCCER certification, craft journeyman, or foreman in industrial construction, maintenance or turnarounds
  • Preferred experience in planning software applications
  • Turner Applications WinTake®, QuickPlan® and Win PCS® experience is an additional benefit

Responsibilities

  • Walking down job scope requests
  • Estimating labor hours for multiple disciplines
  • Developing work plans
  • Creating job plan packages
  • Planning Maintenance, Turnarounds, Small Capital Projects, or a combination of the three
  • Reviewing specifications, drawings, etc. to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate
  • Preparing estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work, material, outside services and sub-contractors
  • Reviewing and incorporating historical data into resources and man-hours estimates
  • Estimating extras, change orders, and discovery work items
  • Maintaining files of working documents and backup estimate figures
  • Using client Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to identify upcoming installations, maintenance, and repairs
  • Estimating scope of work in terms of direct craft labor hours and duration
  • Performing material take-offs for repair or replace-in-kind work
  • Determining resource and skill requirements for scope of work
  • Documenting expectations for resource utilization and timing in client ERP system
  • Determining options for scope of work and presenting scenarios of compatible work packages or combinations of similar scope to the client
  • Documenting change orders requests for deviations on drawings, changes in the field conditions, or engineering busts
  • Performing job-walks and collaboratively with respective discipline Subject Matter Experts to develop job steps (activities), craft breakdown and man-hours required
  • Monitoring and documenting progress of the scope work within the client's ERP system and/or Turner applications
  • Preparing subcontractor work packages for the bid process and work execution
  • Mentoring and coaching junior teammates
