About The Position

The Plumbing & Pipefitting Detailer position is a Full-Time, in-person position located in our San Diego, CA Office. This role will be responsible for creating accurate 3D models and dimensioned shop drawings for plumbing and process piping systems using Autodesk software. You will collaborate closely with project managers, field crews, and neighboring trades to identify layout conflicts and ensure all designs are fully constructible. Additionally, this position requires active Union 230 Membership to successfully support our team in streamlining the transition from virtual modeling to physical installation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and/or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience plumbing and/or mechanical detailing
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in a plumbing and/or mechanical field trade.
  • Proficiency in Revit or AutCAD (or both) along with Navisworks
  • Ability to read construction documents and specs
  • Ability to read and interpret complex architectural drawings, structural plans, mechanical engineering specifications, and contract documents.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate technical modeling data and installation requirements to project managers, shop foremen, and field crews.
  • Must be capable of presenting layout updates and clash detection findings clearly in multidisciplinary trade coordination meetings.
  • Ability to apply advanced geometric and algebraic concepts to calculate precise piping slopes, centerlines, rolling offsets, and spatial clearances.
  • Proven ability to verify dimensional accuracy, calculate material take-offs, and interpret level, elevation, and coordinate data from 3D models and field measurements.
  • Ability to apply logical thinking and spatial reasoning to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Proven ability to identify and resolve multi-variable spatial conflicts and design discrepancies, such as reconciling conflicting layout data between contract drawings, architectural constraints, and structural limitations.
  • This position does require union membership to District Council 16.
  • Candidates must have current work authorization in the U.S.; visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop highly detailed, fabrication-ready shop drawings for complex mechanical piping and plumbing systems, ensuring absolute compliance with local building codes and project specifications.
  • Build accurate, data-rich 3D models within Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks, maintaining high standards for LOD (Level of Development) requirements.
  • Attend model coordination meetings and assist in resolving layout conflicts with other trades.
  • Coordinate clash detection and resolution processes in multidisciplinary coordination meetings, solving spatial conflicts with structural and other trades.
  • Update models to show design changes and answers to RFIs, and distribute the revised files to the team.
  • Bridge the gap between design and execution by collaborating directly with project managers, shop foremen, and field crews to translate models into actionable installation data and spool drawings.
