About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for a Mechanical Inspector position within the Office of Public Works, Building & Zoning Division. This role involves ensuring mechanical installations, repairs, and alterations comply with City codes and ordinances. The inspector will review permit applications, investigate complaints, maintain records, and provide guidance on mechanical code requirements. Enforcement of codes may involve stop-work orders, legal proceedings, and court testimony.

Requirements

  • Four years of high school education.
  • Four years of responsible training in the mechanical trade.
  • An additional five years of work experience in the mechanical field, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire and maintain International Code Council (ICC) Mechanical Inspection Certification within timeframe specified by the City of Springfield.
  • Valid Class D driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.
  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position to be eligible to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect mechanical installations, repairs, and alterations for compliance with City codes and ordinances.
  • Review permit applications, plans, and specifications, and approve permits as appropriate.
  • Investigate complaints, identify code violations, and inspect existing structures for unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain inspection records, prepare reports, and issue notices of violations and corrective actions.
  • Provide guidance to contractors, property owners, design professionals, and the public on mechanical code requirements.
  • Enforce mechanical codes through stop-work orders, legal proceedings, and court testimony as required.
