About The Position

Merrick & Company’s High Performance Facilities (HPF) team is seeking an experienced Mechanical Facilities Engineer to support the design and delivery of HVAC and plumbing systems for a wide range of national defense projects in our San Antonio, TX office. From multi-building campuses to secure facilities across the globe, the HPF team delivers practical, high-performance solutions that meet Government requirements for resilience, readiness, and reliability. Our work directly supports the operation and efficiency of installations critical to the protection and defense of the United States. Typical salary range for this position is $108,500.00 – $132,600.00. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The Mechanical Facilities Engineer III will work under minimal supervision to design HVAC and plumbing/piping systems for a range of mission critical to mission support projects. This role requires independent execution, sound engineering judgment, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams. The Mechanical Facilities Engineer III will serve as a key member of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the delivery of coordinated design packages including drawings, specifications, and calculations. This role may include task-level coordination with engineers and designers. Periodic travel to project sites and other Merrick offices, including international travel, may be required. Project responsibilities include: Plan, conduct, and coordinate HVAC and plumbing system design, including engineering calculations, system layout, equipment selection, and development of construction documents. Prepare coordinated construction documents including plans, details, schedules, and specifications (Divisions 22 and 23). Apply engineering judgment to resolve design challenges, including non-standard conditions, coordination conflicts, and constructability issues. Perform QA/QC reviews of mechanical designs to ensure technical accuracy and code compliance. Support proposal development, including mechanical scope definition, fee estimates, and schedules. Interface with Federal, State, and Local government clients and participate in design reviews, charrettes, and technical discussions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in HVAC and plumbing system design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.
  • Experience designing HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, or federal facilities.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations and equipment selection for air handling systems, hydronic systems, and building domestic water systems.
  • Experience developing coordinated construction documents (plans, details, schedules).
  • Experience developing and coordinating Division 22 and 23 specifications.
  • Working knowledge of IMC, IPC, IBC, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and NFPA.
  • Familiarity with DoD design criteria (UFC, UFGS).
  • Experience with HVAC load calculation software (e.g., Trane TRACE or equivalent).
  • Proficient in Revit for MEP coordination; familiarity with AutoCAD.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting federal or DoD projects (e.g., USACE, AFCEC, NAVFAC).
  • Experience supporting construction administration (submittals, RFIs, site visits).
  • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
  • Active Department of Defense clearance (preferred).
  • LEED, Green Globes, or other sustainability accreditation.
  • Current passport.
