Mechanical Estimator

Quanta Power Solutions, LLCHoover, AL

About The Position

The Mechanical Estimator is a key member of our Preconstruction group, responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for the mechanical scopes of EPC power generation and industrial construction projects. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, procurement, and construction, requiring the ability to read complex technical documents, quantify major equipment and systems, and build cost models used to win and execute some of the largest power infrastructure projects in the region. The ideal candidate brings hands-on familiarity with power plant mechanical systems including gas turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, cooling systems, and BOP mechanical scope, and understands how those systems translate into construction cost, schedule, and labor productivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field OR equivalent experience in the mechanical trades, industrial construction, or EPC project management.
  • 3+ years of experience estimating mechanical scopes on power generation, industrial, or large-scale EPC infrastructure projects.
  • Working knowledge of power generation mechanical systems including gas turbines, HRSGs, steam turbines, boilers, cooling systems, and associated BOP scope.
  • Proficiency with estimating and project software: InEight, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Bluebeam, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Advanced Excel skills with the ability to build, manage, and audit complex, multi-discipline cost models.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, mechanical equipment drawings, IFC drawings, specifications, and EPC contract documents.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience on combined cycle, simple cycle, renewable energy (solar, wind), or battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
  • Familiarity with AACE International cost estimating classifications and cost engineering best practices.
  • Experience developing fully integrated EPC cost models spanning engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Familiarity with OEM procurement strategies, long-lead equipment scheduling, and mechanical subcontract scope development.
  • Knowledge of project controls principles, schedule-driven cost modeling, and earned value management (EVM).
  • Experience with pre-FEED, FEED, and IFC-level estimating phases on large capital projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for major mechanical equipment including gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), boilers, condensers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, air cooled heat exchangers, and rotating auxiliary systems.
  • Estimate balance-of-plant (BOP) mechanical systems including fuel gas, lube oil, cooling water, fire protection, instrument air, chemical treatment, and auxiliary piping systems.
  • Analyze IFB/RFP packages, P&IDs, mechanical equipment lists, general arrangement drawings, isometric drawings, and project specifications to define scope and develop a well-documented estimating basis.
  • Produce estimates across all phases from ROM and conceptual through Class 2/1 detailed design.
  • Evaluate craft labor productivity, rigging and heavy lift requirements, construction sequencing, and installation methodologies specific to power plant construction environments.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, construction, and project management disciplines to validate estimating assumptions, constructability, and project execution strategies.
  • Interface with procurement, engineering, and major equipment OEM vendors and mechanical operating units to solicit, scope, and evaluate quotations and bids for accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness.
  • Participate in estimate review sessions, risk workshops, bid strategy meetings, and client-facing presentations, clearly communicating scope basis, cost drivers, and key assumptions.
  • Partner with project controls to support budget development, schedule integration, and cost tracking on awarded projects.
  • Incorporate risk registers, contingency analysis, escalation factors, indirect costs, equipment installation allowances, and project-specific variables into fully loaded EPC cost estimates.
  • Utilize InEight, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Bluebeam, and Excel-based cost models to develop, manage, and present comprehensive estimates.
  • Maintain and continuously improve historical cost databases, unit rate benchmarks, equipment pricing libraries, and labor productivity factors specific to power generation construction.
  • Support proposal development, owner's engineer reviews, and preconstruction planning for both pursuit and awarded projects.
  • Contribute to alternative scope approaches and value engineering opportunities that improve estimate competitiveness.
  • Conduct or support site visits, pre-bid walkthroughs, and customer meetings as needed.
