About The Position

The overall purpose of this job is to provide assistance to students in a manufacturing lab environment, assist instructors with projects, and maintain lab instrumentation and equipment. The MET laboratory technician is tasked with maintaining equipment and materials available to support the MET program in achieving its educational objectives. This position is a support role with significant interaction with both faculty and students.

Requirements

  • An Associate of Applied Science Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field from an accredited institution,
  • OR the ability to obtain an Associate of Applied Science Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field from an accredited institution within (1) year of initial employment date and a minimum of 5 years related work experience,
  • OR A high school diploma/GED equivalent and 7 years related work experience with the ability to obtain an Associate of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field from an accredited institution within (5) years of initial employment date (candidates must take 6 credit hours per academic year).
  • Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, machining, CNC operations, and CAD/CAM software.
  • Skill in operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing laboratory equipment and instructional technology.
  • Ability to set up, modify, and support laboratory hardware, software, tooling, and instructional equipment.
  • Ability to assist and train students and faculty in the safe and effective use of laboratory resources.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and ability to enforce safe operating practices.
  • Skill in inventory management, purchasing, and coordinating laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to supervise student workers and monitor laboratory operations.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and technical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and vendors.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and instructional tools.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation related to equipment, inventory, and laboratory activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to instructors in METC and ENST courses that use hands-on hardware/software resources. Specifically, machining, CNC operation, and CAD computer lab centric courses for student and instructor use. (Including hosting and supervising open labs)
  • Modify instructional setups, tooling, and equipment specific to METC/ENST training needs. Assist faculty and students in setting up, regulating lab assignments, special projects, and hardware/software access and maintenance.
  • Determine specifications and manage purchasing equipment needed for student labs and requisition tools, supplies, and software for classrooms and labs.
  • Coordinate with department leadership to find and acquire accessible instructional technology including purchasing requests for tooling, material, equipment, software, and other instructional materials necessary for operation.
  • Supervise any student lab workers and monitor the acceptable use of METC/ENST lab equipment and safely facilitate the use of operational spaces.
  • Participate in professional development related to the support and maintenance of technology, especially in a learning environment.
  • Other duties as assigned in the development of personal, departmental, divisional objectives, and strategic priorities of the College.
