About The Position

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Technologist to join Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Engineering Division (AMME) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. The AMME division develops, validates, and transitions materials and materials processes to meet the needs of the Navy and to provide materials expertise and solutions to support ARL programs. This role will support mechanical engineers in the design, development, and testing of new engineering designs as well as leverage advanced manufacturing methods. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

Requirements

  • 3D CAD design and engineering drawing development
  • Prior success reading and interpreting mechanical drawings
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Engineering calculations
  • Success in environments where various forms of communication and organizational skills were crucial to be effective
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted (if filled as Engineering Technologist, Mechanical (ARL) - Advanced Professional)
  • 1+ years of relevant experience (if filled as Engineering Technologist, Mechanical (ARL) - Intermediate Professional)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D models using computer-aided design (CAD) software to support engineering design and development activities
  • Create and maintain detailed engineering drawings for components, assemblies, and complex systems
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analyses and apply appropriate dimensioning, tolerancing, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
  • Collaborate with project leadership to develop conceptual designs for complex systems and subsystems
  • Partner with engineering staff to develop, define, and derive technical requirements supporting the design and development of engineering products
  • Develop and document assembly, integration, and test procedures to support system development and validation
  • Assemble, integrate, and test hardware to verify performance and compliance with technical requirements
  • Support field testing, including test preparation, execution, troubleshooting, and evaluation of system performance
  • Work independently on complex assignments, monitor progress, and evaluate results to ensure successful completion of objectives
  • Communicate ideas, technical concepts, recommendations, and instructions clearly and persuasively to internal and external audiences
  • Develop and apply innovative techniques, concepts, and approaches to address moderately complex strategic and operational challenges
