About The Position

Odys Aviation is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern/Co-Op to support the Propulsion Team. This role requires onsite work at our Long Beach office for 30-40 hours per week for at least 10 weeks. The intern will collaborate with full-time engineers on the design, construction, and integration of mechanical hardware for electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems, including motors, generators, inverters, and cooling components. This is a practical internship where the individual will be responsible for genuine engineering tasks and contribute directly to flight hardware development, encompassing CAD, parts acquisition, and vehicle integration and testing.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in designing hardware using CAD software (NX, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Familiarity with common manufacturing processes.
  • Hands-on experience is strongly preferred.
  • Enjoys hands-on work, including designing, building, and integrating real hardware.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks, and seek clarification when needed.
  • Strong curiosity, attention to detail, and a desire to make a significant impact.

Nice To Haves

  • Participation in student project teams (e.g., UAVs, Formula SAE, robotics, rocketry).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing, basic machining, shop tools).
  • Interest in propulsion systems, electric powertrains, or flight hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Design and update propulsion mechanical components and assemblies during the transition from prototype builds to low-rate production.
  • Design hardware for bench testing and support hardware troubleshooting with propulsion engineers.
  • Assist in resolving design, fit, and integration issues identified during early builds.
  • Implement design enhancements to streamline assembly, improve consistency, and reduce build time.
  • Create and maintain CAD models and drawings, adhering to processes for design change traceability.
  • Support the fabrication and assembly of prototype and production hardware, gaining practical experience in translating designs to the shop floor.
  • Develop work instructions, fixtures, or tooling as necessary for assembly support.
  • Document design modifications, build feedback, and lessons learned to facilitate production ramp-up.
