Mechanical Engineering Co-op (Summer/Fall 2027)
About The Position
The Mechanical Engineering Co-op is a full-time, onsite role in the Displays, Controls, Computing & Networking department at Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The co-op session runs from May/June through December, including the Fall semester. Students are expected to take a semester off from coursework to fully participate in this working mentorship opportunity. The co-op supports new and existing aerospace products alongside hardware and systems engineers. Projects may involve cockpit displays and control panels, servos for control surface actuation, and other avionics equipment that enables aircraft connectivity. The role is U.S.-based and requires U.S. citizenship because only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under the program or contract.
Requirements
- Must be pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering and actively enrolled through completion of the co-op session.
- Experience with 3D parametric modeling using computer-aided design (CAD) tools such as NX, SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, or equivalent; experience may come from on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with thermodynamics.
- Experience with manufacturing methods and limitations, such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, casting, and plastic molding.
Responsibilities
- Investigate production issues, including developing and implementing solutions.
- Support thermal and/or vibration testing of products to ensure survivability or product improvement.
- Support investigations of in-service avionics hardware failures.
- Facilitate the build of prototype assemblies for testing.
