About The Position

WSP is seeking an Experienced Mechanical Engineer for its Charlotte, NC office. This role involves providing technical assistance and guidance for the due diligence, design, development, building, testing, and inspection of mechanical systems for infrastructure, building, and construction projects in both public and private sectors. Responsibilities include research, design, concept development, planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and integration of automatic temperature control, air distribution, hydronic, and plumbing systems. The engineer will also generate reports, ensure quality standards, and contribute to project development and problem-solving.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior mechanical design experience.
Engineer in Training Certification.
Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and their application to project work.
Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
Knowledge of relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Capable interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with diverse audiences.
Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM).
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required.

Nice To Haves

Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

Responsibilities

Collect, compile, and analyze data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and reports for project development, design, and construction.
Perform mechanical engineering work, conduct research, and perform inspections of sites, equipment, and systems to ensure conformance with rules, standards, and permits.
Incorporate advanced technology, modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies for proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.
Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues related to automatic temperature control systems, air distribution, hydronic systems, and plumbing systems.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with equipment installation layout, calculate costs, and ensure project conformity with specifications and regulations.
Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and illustrations.
Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, calculations, statistical analysis, and reporting.
Assist with the development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations explaining research and findings to address design and/or construction issues.
Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gather information on design and construction problems and plan for future needs.
Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data from field investigations and provide input for risk mitigation action plans.
Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
Collaborate with other engineers and planners on projects with building and infrastructure authorities for federally, state, and locally funded projects.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
