Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience in energy storage, automotive, robotics, or industrial systems
  • Registered with Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), or eligible for registration is an asset.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical system design for high-power devices, thermal management, or structural analysis
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM and simulation tools (ANSYS, CFX, or equivalent)
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and working with external vendors and fabricators
  • Strong working knowledge of DFM/DFA, GD&T, and materials selection for mechanical systems
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in battery, fuel cell, or energy storage system design and packaging
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards relevant to energy storage (UL 9540, IEC 62619, CE marking)
  • Background in electrochemical device packaging or fluid-handling mechanical systems

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of battery cells and packs, including enclosures, interconnects, and structural components
  • Design external enclosures for DC-BESS units, covering component placement, fixing and racking strategy, fluid and electrical routing, and IP compliance
  • Create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and BOMs in SolidWorks
  • Conduct tolerance stack-ups and FEA to validate design integrity and performance
  • Select and qualify materials and components against thermal, structural, environmental, and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, electrochemical, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet functional, integration, and DFM requirements
  • Lead discussions with external vendors and fabricators for custom component designs and assemblies
  • Drive engineering sample assembly and participate in hands-on functional testing
  • Lead and contribute to design reviews, DFMEA, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Drive development of test fixtures, jigs, and assembly processes to support pack and BESS validation
  • Support safety and compliance testing to applicable regulatory standards (UL, IEC, CE)
  • Champion the full engineering cycle through integration of internal, field, and commercial feedback
