About The Position

Barr is seeking a mechanical engineer to join our team in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In this hybrid role, you will manage and perform engineering tasks for gas and oil pipeline projects, including station upgrades, relocation and protection of existing pipelines, routing of proposed pipelines, pipe sizing, documents, and trenchless construction design. Qualified individuals will have strong engineering design experience related to pipeline systems engineering, system integrity, and construction or experience related to piping in the natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and oil sectors. This person will help develop our presence and assist with establishing our capabilities related to natural gas pipelines. A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. They must possess a flexible working style and be willing to occasionally modify their schedule to meet deadlines and/or client needs. They must be able to work cooperatively in a project team environment that encourages self-initiative and demonstrate effective project organization and management skills. Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position will be based out of Barr's Ann Arbor, Michigan, office. Travel expectation: up to 10% domestic fieldwork, with an average of one day every two weeks during projects to verify dimensions and project progress. Work environment: ability to work in locations that include rough terrain typical of construction outdoor sites with limited accessibility and moving machinery. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or civil engineering.
  • 5+ years or relevant experience.
  • Oil and gas industry engineering practices, including 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195, ASME codes, and API standards.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office suite
  • Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification preferred or ability and willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed engineering design of gas, hazardous liquids, slurry, and other pipeline systems projects, including design of trenchless crossings (bore, microtunnel, HDD).
  • Prepare detailed engineering of pipeline facilities including regulation and meter runs, pig launchers, interconnects, relief systems, measurement systems, compressor station piping systems, gas conditioning systems, distribution system design, etc.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing projects.
  • Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.
  • Prepare project funding documents such as cost estimates, equipment bid summaries, and authorization requests.
  • Participate in field and/or site walks to coordinate field investigation work for surveys, utility investigations, and cathodic protection in support of the pipeline design efforts.
