Mechanical Engineer

Delek•Big Spring, TX

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer provides technical expertise to support the safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operation of an oil refinery’s mechanical equipment and process systems. The role evaluates fixed and rotating equipment performance, develops engineering solutions, supports maintenance, turnarounds, and capital projects, and helps maintain mechanical integrity in accordance with refinery standards and applicable codes and regulations. The engineer works with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection, Reliability, Process Engineering, Process Safety, contractors, and other stakeholders to reduce risk, improve equipment reliability, and sustain refinery throughput. The role supports refinery equipment including pressure vessels, piping systems, heat exchangers, fired heaters, storage tanks, pumps, compressors, turbines, and valves. It includes field support for troubleshooting and equipment work in operating process units, participation in process safety activities, and development and maintenance of engineering documentation and equipment strategies. The position may also provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced personnel as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Two or more years of mechanical engineering experience in refining, petrochemical processing, chemical manufacturing, or a similar continuous-process industry.
  • Working knowledge of refinery fixed and rotating equipment, mechanical design, failure analysis, corrosion and damage mechanisms, and maintenance practices.
  • Familiarity with OSHA Process Safety Management requirements and applicable API, ASME, ANSI, ASTM, and National Board codes and standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, isometrics, equipment data sheets, inspection reports, technical specifications, and vendor documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and refinery engineering, inspection, maintenance, or project-management systems relevant to the role.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with refinery employees, contractors, equipment vendors, and cross-functional teams in an operating environment.
  • No licensure or certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer-in-Training certification or Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Direct experience in an oil refinery or petrochemical facility.
  • Experience with refinery mechanical integrity programs, API inspection standards, fitness-for-service evaluations, and recognized corrosion or damage mechanisms.
  • Experience with reliability improvement, root-cause analysis, vibration analysis, condition monitoring, or risk-based inspection.
  • Experience managing refinery mechanical projects from concept through commissioning, startup, and closeout.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering support for refinery fixed and rotating equipment and associated systems.
  • Evaluate equipment performance, degradation mechanisms, recurring failures, and operating concerns; lead or support root-cause analyses and develop corrective actions.
  • Support the mechanical integrity program by reviewing inspection findings, fitness-for-service assessments, remaining-life evaluations, repair plans, and equipment recommendations.
  • Develop scopes of work, technical specifications, equipment data sheets, engineering calculations, cost estimates, schedules, and design packages for maintenance, turnaround, and capital projects.
  • Review drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, calculations, vendor proposals, inspection reports, and design documents for technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide field support for troubleshooting, repairs, installation, commissioning, startup, shutdown, and performance testing in operating process units.
  • Participate in management-of-change reviews, process hazard analyses, pre-startup safety reviews, incident investigations, risk assessments, and other process safety activities.
  • Ensure engineering designs and recommendations comply with refinery procedures, OSHA Process Safety Management requirements, environmental and safety regulations, and applicable industry standards.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection, Reliability, Process Engineering, Procurement, contractors, and equipment vendors to execute work safely and efficiently.
  • Provide engineering support during planned outages, unit shutdowns, turnarounds, equipment repairs, and unplanned operational events.
  • Develop and maintain equipment strategies, preventive and predictive maintenance recommendations, engineering files, equipment records, and technical documentation.
  • Monitor project costs, schedules, quality, contractor performance, and technical risks; communicate status and emerging issues to refinery leadership and project stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, energy efficiency, unit availability, refinery throughput, and lifecycle cost while maintaining process safety and environmental compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced engineers, inspectors, technicians, and maintenance personnel as assigned.
