About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer, Advanced Energy, is responsible for technical development of advanced energy products, focusing on mechanical and electrical design of advanced energy catheters and instruments. The role contributes to exploring a novel system concept for a new application of surgical robotics and supports innovative technology development and commercialization. The engineer applies mechanical design fundamentals to component- and subsystem-level design, material, and manufacturing challenges, with guidance from more experienced engineers. The role also contributes to troubleshooting and root cause analysis across disciplines and requires a commitment to high-quality prototypes and products in a focused, small-team environment. The engineer works on a cross-functional team to design, develop, and verify concepts for advanced energy catheters, flexible electromechanical instruments, and accessories. Duties include hands-on assembly and testing, developing and documenting design and manufacturing processes, investigating defects, collaborating with clinical engineers, and participating in clinical observations and pre-clinical and clinical activities. The position is full-time and requires commuting or relocating to Sunnyvale, California, with up to 10% travel and possible international travel.

Requirements

  • Typically at least 5 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree, or at least 3 years with a master's degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional research and development teams.
  • Familiarity with FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods for instruments, components, and fixtures, including 3D printing and machining of plastics and metals.
  • Experience or exposure to flexible catheter design, including material selection and common fabrication methods in at least some of the following: polymer processing, reinforcement structures, adhesive, thermal, or mechanical joining, and electromechanical integration.
  • Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Experience working with suppliers.
  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision and recognize when to escalate.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Must be available to work full-time and commute to or relocate to Sunnyvale, California.
  • Able to travel up to 10%; some international travel may be required.
