About The Position

Berkeley Lab’s Engineering Division is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to oversee medium to large projects and perform complex mechanical engineering work, including design, manufacturing planning, and quality assurance. The position contributes to large projects or multiple smaller projects while working within budget and schedule constraints. Projects may involve particle accelerators, optics, beamline design, magnetic systems, cryogenic systems, and vacuum systems. This is a matrix position that requires flexibility to change assignments as needed. At Level 2, the engineer uses CAD and FEA tools, independently resolves project issues within the project team, develops practical solutions for small projects, and integrates new technologies with established designs. The role includes preparing design specifications, analyses, recommendations, and technical reports; conducting developmental work; collaborating with senior engineers and scientific personnel to clarify requirements; and providing guidance to other staff. As needed, the engineer may take responsibility for project subtasks, prepare EVMS reporting materials for Level 2 or 3 managers, direct technical staff, and present technical work at conferences. This is a full-time, two-year term appointment, with the possibility of extension or conversion to a career appointment based on satisfactory performance, continued funding, and operational needs. Work will be performed primarily at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in Berkeley, California. The position may be subject to a background check, and the finalist must disclose certain misconduct-related administrative or judicial decisions and investigations as described in the posting.
