Mechanical Engineer

Haptica Robotics•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Haptica is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join their hardware team. The role involves taking a glove prototype to small-batch manufacturing readiness. The engineer will be responsible for prototyping, testing, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and early supply chain development. This includes developing sensing boards, machined manifolds, valves, fittings, and heat-pressed softgoods. The position spans mechanical design, industrial design, pneumatics, softgoods, and some electronics and firmware. The engineer will work closely with the CEO to ensure the technology meets high standards of reliability, robustness, and comfort for robotics companies.

Requirements

  • 3 to 5+ years in mechanical product design.
  • Experience bringing at least 1 product from concept to production.
  • Excellent CAD skills (Onshape preferred, SolidWorks or Fusion acceptable) with good habits for top-level assemblies and versioning.
  • Understanding of standards required by robotics companies for production deployment.
  • Experience designing and running test protocols to ASTM or similar standards.
  • Comfort with mechatronics, including experience with sensors and custom boards.
  • Ability to flash firmware and make small changes.
  • Proficiency with a multimeter and oscilloscope for troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on prototyping skills, including 3D printing, operating a desktop CNC, machining, and managing fixtures.
  • Experience working with manufacturing partners overseas, including obtaining quotes, calibrating timelines, and adjusting designs for manufacturability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in pneumatics or fluidics (valves, manifolds, sealing, leak testing).
  • Experience in softgoods, sewn goods, textiles, or wearables.
  • Experience owning or managing DFM at a larger company and scaling a product.

Responsibilities

  • Own Haptica's build end-to-end, including assembly SOPs, jigs and fixtures, kitting, and BOM and inventory management.
  • Manually build tens of units to refine craft, including designing enclosures, manifolds, fittings, and fixtures for various manufacturing processes.
  • Build out the test program, including protocols (ASTM or similar standards for seal peel, cycle, abrasion, environmental), in-house test rigs, and samples for external labs.
  • Partner with supply chain vendors and contract manufacturers to transition from manual assembly to small batch production, defining scope, testing, and providing feedback on manufacturability.
  • Integrate Haptica with customers, partnering with robotics companies to bring Haptica into real-world teleoperation and deployment setups.
  • Drive the mechanical engineering roadmap to ensure easy and reliable integration with various hands and grippers.
  • Partner closely with designers, bringing engineering constraints to the table and driving a cohesive vision and design language.
  • Set standards for process and documentation, including PRDs, BOMs, and SOPs, to ensure excellent handoff from design to manufacturing.
