About The Position

Leidos Defense Systems is seeking a talented Senior Mechanical Engineer for its Hypersonics line of business. The selected candidate will support the Common Hypersonic Glide Body program (CHGB), which is the Army’s #1 priority for strategic weapons capability for long-range precision fires. This role involves supporting the development and production of cutting-edge technology in a fast-paced environment. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution with 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo, CATIA, AutoCAD, or SolidWorks.
  • Experience working within Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) environments.
  • Work knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, and configuration management processes.
  • Experience supporting issue resolution in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical reviews and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong attention-to-detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience interacting directly with customers and representing engineering organizations.
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and in team environments, as well as ability to provide clarification and instruction to others.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Nice To Haves

  • Active security clearance.
  • Experience supporting DoD programs related to missile systems, reentry vehicles, or hypersonic technologies.
  • Prior work in assembly, integration, or testing of missile systems.
  • Experience supporting rapid development, prototyping, or fast-paced engineering programs.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 aerospace quality management systems.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-31000 Technical Data Package (TDP) development.
  • Experience creating engineering drawings using PTC Creo and managing data in Windchill.
  • Understanding of cost, schedule, and programmatic impacts associated with engineering deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering activities for the CHGB Payload Assembly.
  • Ensure complete and accurate definition of payload assembly components, subsystems, and ground support equipment within the Technical Data Package (TDP).
  • Work with the design agent to incorporate design changes that enhance manufacturability, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to identify and resolve production bottlenecks impacting manufacturing flow.
  • Coordinate with supplier program managers to ensure timely and reliable delivery of hardware and components.
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineering to develop and refine work instructions, streamline processes, and optimize production operations.
  • Provide direct support to technicians during payload assembly and integration activities, including periodic onsite work within classified environments (~10% of time).
  • Disposition nonconforming hardware and lead Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations.
  • Lead the Failure Review Board (FRB) process to resolve technical issues.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate program risks and improvement opportunities to the Risk and Opportunity (RIO) Board.
  • Serve as a technical representative to the customer, providing program status updates and communicating engineering and manufacturing activities.
