About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer supports the mechanical engineering team by developing accurate, manufacturable designs for sheet metal panels, structural supports, barriers, and conductive copper bus assemblies for low- to medium-voltage switchgear. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, this role helps ensure designs meet customer requirements, regulatory standards, safety expectations, and manufacturing best practices. The position collaborates with electrical designers, engineers, project managers, and manufacturing personnel while building knowledge of switchgear design and fabrication processes. The role is based in an office, with frequent visits to the production floor and regional sites. Project requirements and tight client deadlines may require workweeks exceeding 40 hours, including weekends or holidays.

Requirements

  • 3 to 7 years of progressive mechanical design experience, with significant experience in switchgear, power distribution equipment, or related electrical equipment manufacturing.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience with sheet metal design, structural assemblies, and conductive bus bar design for low- to medium-voltage applications.
  • Proficiency with AutoDesk Inventor or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Experience preparing parts lists, bills of materials, and assembly drawings for manufacturing.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal fabrication and machining.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management and quality control concepts.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and customers.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented, with a commitment to quality and integrity.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate proportions, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Ability to move around the manufacturing plant, including walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
  • Occasional manual dexterity to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 25 pounds, following OSHA standards.
  • Sufficient vision and hearing to navigate the plant safely and communicate effectively.
  • Frequent travel to regional sites is required, and presence on production floors is expected.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT), Fundamentals of Engineering (FE), or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 3D models and drawings of sheet metal panels, structural supports, barriers, and bus assemblies using AutoDesk Inventor.
  • Ensure designs meet manufacturability, customer specifications, safety, and regulatory requirements, with review and guidance from senior engineering staff.
  • Collaborate with electrical designers to integrate structural and copper bus elements into customer drawing packages.
  • Support project management, manufacturing, sales, estimating, and field service teams in project execution and technical issue resolution.
  • Prepare bills of materials, assembly drawings, and cut sheets to support manufacturing in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cycle time by reusing or adapting existing designs where applicable.
  • Contribute to design reviews and process improvements under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Develop working knowledge of switchgear manufacturing processes, sheet metal fabrication, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
