Mechanical Engineer Specialist - Emerging Technologies

Eaton Corporation•Indianapolis, IN
•$122,000 - $162,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Eaton Research Lab (ERL) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Specialist to support research and technology development in emerging technology programs. The role designs, develops, and tests power-electronics-based circuit protection and power-conversion technologies and products. The engineer works with cross-functional teams to develop mechanical systems and subsystems for low- and medium-voltage AC and DC applications, and develops and tests electromechanical actuation and electrical contact technologies. The position also involves building customer relationships and presenting ideas and projects to Eaton business leaders and ERL leadership, communicating complex technologies clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences. The position reports to the Technology Manager for the Power Electronics group of ERL. This is a hybrid role requiring on-site work three days per week at Eaton’s facility in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Relocation is available for a qualified candidate currently residing in the United States.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • At least 7 years of electromechanical design experience, including mechanical actuation and electrical-equipment enclosure and packaging design; creating specifications; defining application space; designing technical solution concepts; and building and testing prototypes.
  • Must not require employment immigration sponsorship or support now or in the future.
  • Experience in electromechanical design, including mechanical actuation and electrical-equipment enclosure and packaging design, and use of prototypes to validate models or hypotheses and document results.
  • Ability to comply with site-specific electrical test-lab equipment and procedures, including health, safety, and security requirements.
  • Experience modeling mechanical systems with computer-aided design and simulation tools; examples include Creo, Inventor, SolidWorks, and ANSYS.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational and prioritization skills to manage multiple assigned projects and expectations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Academic or postgraduate experience in the power electronics industry and/or low- or high-voltage inverters or converters.
  • Experience with power-electronics electromechanical packaging techniques and understanding of how parasitic capacitance and inductance affect circuit performance.
  • Expertise in electromechanical energy conversion, such as solenoids, Thompson coils, or motor theory, and in power-electronic module packaging and mechanical integration for indoor, outdoor, and harsh-environment applications.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Strong project-management and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Create emerging power-electronics-augmented electromechanical actuation and mechanism solutions based on breakthrough technologies for industrial, automotive, truck, and aerospace applications.
  • Lead and develop technology projects, support local and remote teams, and work with external technology resources, including business divisions, universities, suppliers, and customers.
  • Advance mechanical design and packaging for power electronics, electrical protection, and power-converter technologies, and identify commercialization opportunities with Eaton businesses.
  • Lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary, multicultural, globally distributed teams; lead assigned tasks and provide updates to the project manager.
  • Identify, analyze, develop, and validate technologies in electromechanical actuation, motion control, materials, and mechanical-system simulation and modeling.
  • Participate in technology strategy discussions with Eaton businesses and develop technology road maps.
  • Lead and support technology-development projects in collaboration with Eaton business divisions, universities, national laboratories, and customers.
  • Build global organizational capabilities in electromechanical design.
  • Design, build, test, evaluate, and iterate prototype mechanical systems and electromechanical devices, and document results.
  • Drive product design from concept to a lab-validated, customer-demonstrable minimum viable product.
  • Use statistical quality tools to establish performance baselines, identify robustness-improvement priorities, and measure improvements.
  • Drive component- and system-level modeling and simulation and initiate changes to existing and new component designs.

Benefits

  • Health and Welfare benefits.
  • Retirement benefits.
  • Programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Relocation assistance is available for a qualified candidate currently residing in the United States.
