Sargent & LundyCasper, WY
$84,762 - $129,498Hybrid

About The Position

This senior-level Mechanical Engineer position involves leading the Mechanical Engineering design efforts for a team of junior and senior engineers and designers. The role requires working on challenging assignments, including investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of mechanical engineering issues. The engineer will act as the Mechanical team lead in coordinating detailed design phases, developing integrated systems designs, and performing supporting calculations. Responsibilities include preparing technical specifications, engineering studies, and performing independent reviews of work performed by others. The position also involves coordinating and guiding other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers, as well as performing reviews of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements. Career development is encouraged through peer-learning and participation in "Communities of Practice." Mentorship of less experienced engineers and communication with client staff are also key aspects of the role. This position is based on a hybrid work schedule, requiring three days per week in the office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program.
  • Five or more years of experience in the design of mechanical engineering systems for non-commercial, heavy industrial plants (power plant - essential, oil & gas, or chemical - valued), with a focus on integrated, detailed system design for new plants, modifications, or replacements.
  • Experience must include the selection of equipment, piping materials, control philosophy, and the preparation of supporting calculations and specifications.
  • Ability to take a lead role in the completion of preliminary engineering studies that evaluate multiple solutions to address a given client’s problem or need.
  • Sound technical judgement, technical writing skills, and experience with preparing high level bills of materials and needed equipment lists for estimating.
  • Three or more years of experience in leading an engineering design team through all phases of capital projects or small to medium plant services projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's in Mechanical Engineering.
  • PE License.
  • Experience in oil & gas, or chemical industries.
  • Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.
  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the Mechanical Engineering design efforts for a team of junior and senior engineers and designers.
  • Investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of mechanical engineering issues.
  • Acting as the Mechanical team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of mechanical engineering work.
  • Developing integrated systems designs and performing supporting calculations for the planned work.
  • Preparing technical specifications for mechanical engineering equipment.
  • Preparing engineering studies.
  • Performing independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation.
  • Coordinating and providing guidance to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure a complete and timely design.
  • Performing reviews of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and presenting findings and recommendations to clients and peers.
  • Developing career via peer-learning through sharing of knowledge with other experienced engineers by way of S&L’s systems of process and associated “Communities of Practice.”
  • Providing guidance as a mentor in the development of less experienced engineers.
  • Communicating and interacting with client staff.
  • Leading others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Directing automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.
  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
