About The Position

The BIW’s Design Services Mechanical Engineering group performs duties and provides leadership and supervision to teams of Engineers, Technicians, BMDA Designers, and Associate Engineers to accomplish BIW Lead Yard Services (LYS) contract tasking and support for all DDG 51 New Construction Design and Engineering teams. The Mechanical Engineering Position supports one of the major mechanical teams for the Design Services organization - Pipe, Machinery, or HVAC Functional Engineering positions. These roles provide engineering support for projects and Engineering Proposals (ECPs). Strong technical knowledge and understanding of ship systems, requirements and standards are critical to success in this role.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college required.
  • WINDOWS and WINDOWS software operating skills required
  • Engineer II: 1-2 years of experience required
  • Engineer III: 3+ years of experience required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of machine design, manufacturing, and installation
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Secret level security clearance.
  • This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance.
  • You must be a US Citizen for consideration
  • you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • CAD (CATIA or AutoCAD) skills are desirable.
  • Engineer I: 0-1 years of experience preferred
  • Knowledge of propulsion, generator or turbine systems preferred.
  • Experience with testing and qualification of equipment to industry or military standards.
  • System modeling experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of engines, propellers, reduction gears, steering gears, shafting, bearings, seals and generators preferred.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Access database and VBA preferred

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all BIW safety and security standards while working across office, manufacturing, and shipboard environments.
  • Communicate safety concerns and model safe behaviors.
  • Ensure safe workplace conditions and compliance with government and company safety standards.
  • Manage activities related to DDG 51 and/or DDG(X) class system and equipment.
  • Responsible for engineering change proposals (ECP’s) and on-time development of system deliverables, including functional diagrams, and technical reporting and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain equipment specifications, diagrams, and associated calculations.
  • Interface with customers to resolve technical issues, recommend changes and maintain appropriate communications.
  • Where BIW is dependent on a supplier to resolve a technical issue, work closely with procurement counterparts to ensure we are getting answers and actions in a timely manner.
  • Develop, document, and present technical position on requirements compliance issues related to design and construction within assigned area of cognizance.
  • Create CAE models that simulate ship system designs and perform analyses and calculations.
  • Develop and define ship system engineering requirements and relate them to top level performance requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to interfacing teams, supporting day-to-day operations and providing input for long-term planning.
  • Maintain effective communication with team leads.
  • Foster collaboration between Engineering & Design teams.
  • Maintain strong professional relationships with the U.S. Navy including NAVSEA PMS 400, NAVSEA, and other stakeholders.
  • Promote BIW capabilities and Design Services, supporting business development and growth opportunities.
  • Champion BOS principles and productivity enhancements across teams.
  • Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities, lead implementation of process improvements.
  • Leverage A3 problem-solving and other structured improvement tools.
