About The Position

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with hands-on experience in low-voltage switchgear design to support the development and documentation of UL 891 assemblies. This role focuses on creating detailed mechanical layouts that are compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements. This is a highly technical position requiring direct experience with switchgear systems, strong CAD skills, and close collaboration with both engineering and production teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3–8+ years of experience designing low-voltage switchgear
  • Direct, hands-on experience with UL 891 switchgear design
  • Ability to independently execute designs with minimal oversight
  • Strong understanding of switchgear enclosure and structural design
  • Strong understanding of breaker mounting and compartment layouts
  • Strong understanding of bus compartment segregation and required clearances
  • Strong understanding of cable entry, routing, and termination access
  • Strong understanding of thermal management, ventilation, and arc containment
  • Experience supporting UL inspections and compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar)
  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, weldments, and manufacturing processes
  • Strong collaboration skills across engineering and production teams
  • High attention to detail with strong documentation practices

Nice To Haves

  • Delivery of accurate, UL 891-compliant designs on schedule
  • Smooth handoff from engineering to manufacturing with minimal rework
  • Effective coordination with electrical and production teams
  • Strong ownership and accountability while maintaining quality and compliance

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs for UL 891 switchgear assemblies
  • Create enclosure layouts, internal compartments, breaker mounting configurations, and structural components
  • Design bus compartments, cable routing paths, and service access points
  • Incorporate cooling, ventilation, and arc containment considerations into designs
  • Produce fabrication-ready documentation, including general arrangement drawings, sheet metal part drawings, weldment details, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Ensure all documentation aligns with UL 891 standards and internal design guidelines
  • Work closely with electrical engineering to align mechanical layouts with one-line diagrams, bus design, and cable terminations
  • Participate in design reviews to resolve clearance, interference, and accessibility issues
  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) efforts
  • Assist production teams during build, testing, and inspection phases
  • Support UL inspections and ensure compliance documentation is complete
  • Contribute to value engineering initiatives to improve cost efficiency and overall design performance
  • Maintain accuracy and ownership in a fast-paced production environment
  • Travel occasionally for coordination with manufacturing teams or suppliers
