The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Job Description Summary The Mechanical Engineer - Level B or C, with Level C being the highest title, reports to a Managing Engineer or Managing Architect, or a higher assignment level Engineer or Architect and is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, to achieve the objectives of the Authority. Job Description The Studio is looking for mechanical Engineers with experience in the design of related systems of buildings. General Responsibilities for both titles include: Develop HVAC energy system design, including engineering calculations, technical reports and mechanical engineering drawings and project specifications, using AutoCAD 2D/3D, Revit, Trace 700, HVAC Unit Selection. Perform mechanical engineering analysis and load calculation for heating, cooling and ventilation systems for commercial and education buildings using Trace 700/Trane 3D in compliance with Energy conservation code (NYCECC & ASHRAE) and NYC DOB construction code. Develop airflow diagrams, mechanical design detail plans, and schedule plans, applying LEED and Navisworks; Develop building management system (BMS) control philosophy, details, and plans with control engineers; Develop layouts for HVAC and energy ductwork and piping plans. Coordinate and manage and maintain basic knowledge of energy piles or geothermal energy design. Responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed. Provide overall coordination for design projects. Perform and/or supervises the preparation of scope, pre-schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications. Work with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel as well as outside consultants, contractors, vendors, and various government agencies. May function as a project leader reporting to an Engineer/Architect B or Engineer/Architect C, Managing Architect, Managing Engineer, or Director to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers and Architects. May direct Associate (non-licensed) Engineers/Architects and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, and/or Technical Inspectors working on several less complex design and construction projects, such as new schools, modernizations, additions, leased space, and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). Responsibilities specific to Engineer – B Engineer B may supervise lower-level Architects and Engineers, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists, Associate Architects and Associate Engineers, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians. Work on several more complex design projects such as large primary schools, small intermediate schools, special types of buildings (e.g., special education schools), full modernization, large additions, and specialized and/or numerous CIP projects. May chair or participate in departmental seminars and workshops. Trains and mentors lower level/new employees. Performs the duties of Architect - A when necessary. Performs related duties, as assigned. Responsibilities specific to Engineer C Engineer - C is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, and manages team members and/or contractors on projects to achieve the objectives of the Authority. Works as a project leader on multiple, complex construction projects and major design and exploration programs to plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise the work of stakeholders such as Engineers, Architects, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, Associate Architects, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, resolving any problems that occur. Manages multiple projects simultaneously. Ensures compliance to codes, standards, and that the project is completed on schedule. Performs design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects. Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures. May be required to sign, seal and file engineering drawings. May perform duties of Engineer - B and/or Engineer - A. Performs related duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degree in related discipline from an accredited university/college plus:
  • A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and three years of full-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project team, or squad leader
  • A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and six years of full-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; three years must be as a project engineer; project, team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility.
  • Current New York State Professional Engineer license must be maintained for the duration of employment for both levels.
  • 3 or more years of experience designing Mechanical systems, including working on medium to large commercial buildings required.
