About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer IV – Test is a key technical contributor to a team developing advanced propulsion and Aero technologies that enable mission-critical capabilities across defense and space systems. The team designs, develops and integrates the next generation of propulsion hardware, taking ownership of critical system components from concept through deployment. We are looking for an experienced test engineer with expertise in leading complex testing programs, advanced data analysis and system validation for aerospace applications. This position reports to the Engineering Manager and is part of our Strategic Systems Department based in Reno, NV. It is located in Reno, NV.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or other relevant discipline from an accredited university. May consider equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of mechanical engineering experience.

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university.

Responsibilities

  • Possesses extensive knowledge in test assembly and integration, data acquisition, statistical modeling, multivariate analysis, time series analysis, measurement techniques and planning tests for complex systems.
  • Can lead activities, design complex setups, develop custom fixtures, optimize testing processes, troubleshoot instrumentation and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Possesses experience in various communication modalities, including public speaking, negotiation, conflict resolution and persuasive communication.
  • Excels in designing professional presentations, delivering complex technical presentations and writing specialized technical documents, demonstrating advanced writing techniques and ensuring accuracy and precision in communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • The individual should have a basic understanding of electromechanical actuators, igniters, pressure vessel, solid rocket motor systems, hot gas valves and thrusters.
  • Proficiency in creating complex 2D or 3D designs, using CAD commands efficiently, producing detailed technical drawings, effectively applying GD&T symbols, accurately analyzing engineering drawings and communicating dimensional and tolerance requirements.
  • Understands the tie-in between testing and verification and validation of requirements.
  • Can contribute to identifying potential risks, analyzing failure modes and implementing reliability and safety measures.
  • The individual should have basic financial knowledge, effective leadership skills and teamwork abilities.
  • The individual should be able to participate in procurement activities, understand the structure of proposals and create simple schedules using basic tools and terminology.
  • Understands propellant chemistry, combustion principles, grain geometry, internal ballistics and solid propellant manufacturing processes, including types, composition, combustion mechanisms and grain performance factors.
  • Designs simple control systems using standard techniques, understands diagrams and specifications and implements basic algorithms.
  • Conducts requirements elicitation, prioritizes stakeholder needs and documents requirements using standard templates.
  • Understands solid rocket motor performance principles, including thrust, specific impulse and propellant combustion.
  • Understands CFD principles, navigates software interfaces and performs simulations.
  • Can set up and run structural analysis models, interpret results and apply engineering judgment.
  • Can perform dynamic analysis tasks, set up thermal analysis models and identify manufacturing and assembly issues related to geometric tolerances.
  • Understands basic battery design principles, cable/wire harness design, circuit board design, rocket motor ignition systems and software design principles, contributing to tasks under guidance.
  • Identifies common components and connections and contributes to the generation of basic software designs while following standard specifications and guidelines.
