CHAOS is seeking Mechanical Design Interns for Summer 2027! This is a paid, in-person, 12-week internship role. The ideal candidate is technically curious, comfortable working with hardware, able to communicate clearly, and motivated to learn quickly in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment. You will design and build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful projects into production.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or any related field.
  • Must be a rising senior at the time of the internship and return to school at the end of the internship to continue academic studies for at least one quarter/semester.
  • Worked in an academic project team or laboratory experience.
  • Currently enrolled in an undergrad or graduate engineering program.
  • CAD skills (any platform) and ability to make high-quality engineering drawings that meet common industry standards.
  • Demonstrated hands-on fabrication skills.
  • High competence with, and fluid use of, engineering first principles.
  • U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export-controlled data.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience through internships, student teams, research, military service, or personal projects involving aerospace, defense, robotics, vehicles, mechanisms, electronics packaging, or ruggedized hardware.
  • Exposure to structural or thermal analysis using hand calculations or commercial FEA tools.
  • Experience with machining, additive manufacturing, sheet metal, composites, welding, or other fabrication techniques.
  • Experience in SolidWorks and 3D computer aided design, CAD
  • Ability to perform basic static and dynamic calculations, component sizing, and tolerance

Responsibilities

  • Own a scoped mechanical design project from concept through prototype, with mentorship from a senior engineer.
  • Build and iterate on 3D CAD models, assemblies, and drawings for structures, frames, mounts, enclosures, and mechanisms.
  • Analyze failures.
  • Transition successful projects into production.
