The High-Spec Water Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, technical assurance, and delivery of complex water and wastewater mechanical systems across high value, high risk, or regulated projects. The role requires deep technical expertise, strong stakeholder engagement, and leadership in ensuring systems meet stringent performance, safety, and regulatory requirements. This position plays a critical role in delivering robust, efficient, and compliant water infrastructure, often within multidisciplinary teams and fast paced environments.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline.
  • Significant experience in water, wastewater, or utilities engineering environments.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulics, pumping systems, treatment processes, and mechanical plant.
  • Proven ability to deliver high spec, safety critical, or regulated projects.
  • Excellent technical writing, problem solving, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Chartered or working toward CEng status (IMechE or equivalent).
  • Experience with major frameworks, utilities providers, or mission critical facilities.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency, resilience, and sustainability principles.
  • Familiarity with digital design tools (e.g. 3D modelling, BIM environments).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design and specification of water and wastewater systems, including: o Pumping systems o Treatment processes o Pipework and valve networks o Filtration and disinfection systems o Mechanical plant and ancillary equipment
  • Produce and review high spec technical documentation, including: o Design calculations o Technical specifications o Schematics and layouts o Equipment schedules
  • Ensure designs comply with industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g. WRAS, BS/EN standards, local water authority requirements).
  • Carry out technical assurance and independent design reviews.
  • Support projects from concept through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and regulators to resolve technical challenges.
  • Review contractor submissions, method statements, and commissioning plans.
  • Provide site support, inspections, and witness testing where required.
  • Act as a technical authority for water mechanical systems within the business.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and project teams.
  • Contribute to technical strategy, best practice development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with civil, electrical, ICA, and process engineering disciplines.
