Mechanical Engineer, Compressor

AtmosZero•Loveland, CO
•$105,000 - $180,000•Onsite

About The Position

AtmosZero is developing Boiler 2.0, a modular industrial heat pump that produces steam from electricity and air. The company is integrating first-of-a-kind compressor hardware into a 1 MW product through procurement, fabrication, assembly, installation, and testing. This role owns the mechanical details and interfaces needed to make the compressor package reliable, serviceable, and repeatable. The position may be hired at Engineer II, Engineer III, or Senior Engineer I, according to the scope, independence, and judgment demonstrated during interviews. At Engineer II, the role independently manages defined mechanical projects or portions of the product. At Engineer III, it owns significant subsystems or design work packages and manages interfaces and ambiguity with limited supervision. At Senior Engineer I, it leads complex mechanical initiatives through ambiguity, mentors teammates, and influences cross-functional decisions from architecture and trade studies through validation and production readiness. The role reports to the Vice President of Engineering and is onsite in Loveland, Colorado.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, with experience appropriate to the level at which the candidate is hired.
  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals involving precision assemblies, fits and tolerances, materials, fasteners, load paths, thermal growth, vibration, and equipment integration.
  • Experience taking complex mechanical hardware from requirements through release, fabrication, assembly, test, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with production-quality CAD, drawings, bills of material, interface-control documentation, and engineering changes.
  • Ability to perform or review calculations for loads, alignment, deflection, thermal expansion, tolerance stack-up, and component sizing.
  • Ability to work directly with suppliers, fabricators, technicians, and test teams to turn incomplete inputs into controlled engineering decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with compressors, pumps, turbomachinery, rotating equipment, bearings, seals, motors, or other high-speed mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with compressor skids, pressure-boundary interfaces, lubrication systems, vibration instrumentation, alignment, or rotor-support hardware.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and PDM-controlled release, large assemblies, GD&T, DFMEA, supplier qualification, or prototype builds.
  • Experience with industrial heat pumps, refrigeration, steam systems, or packaged industrial equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical integration of the compressor and high-speed rotating assembly into the 1 MW product.
  • Develop and maintain compressor-package models, drawings, interface definitions, bills of material, and installation requirements.
  • Coordinate bearings, seals, shafts, housings, motors, instrumentation, mounting, piping connections, alignment, guarding, and service access.
  • Support compressor procurement, supplier reviews, fabrication, assembly, installation, commissioning, and testing.
  • Diagnose mechanical and interface issues with the Turbomachinery Engineer, suppliers, technicians, test engineers, and external specialists.
  • Create and close compressor-related ECOs, drawing revisions, deviations, and configuration-control records.
  • Translate first-of-a-kind learning into manufacturable, reliable, and serviceable production designs.
  • Lead or support tolerance analysis, rotor-package interface reviews, DFMEA, technical risk reduction, and supplier qualification.
  • Take ownership of a defined compressor-integration work package during the first 90 days.
  • Resolve hardware or test issues and release resulting drawings, interface updates, and ECOs by six months.
  • Deliver a validated compressor-package improvement incorporated into the production-intent 1 MW design by twelve months.
