About The Position

Storion Energy is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op to join their product development team, focusing on battery stack development. This role involves supporting product design, prototype assembly, quality control, and testing of battery stacks. The co-op will work under the guidance of Senior Engineers on various engineering projects, gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced, innovative environment. The position is a full-time, in-person role located in Billerica, MA, with a duration from January 2027 to July 2027. Storion Energy is a joint venture focused on commercializing Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) in the United States, addressing renewable energy intermittency and grid resiliency.

Requirements

  • Working towards a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must have housing and transportation to Billerica, MA location.
  • Must be able and willing to work with battery electrolyte, which is acidic and requires wearing PPE.
  • Ability to lift 30-pound boxes of parts.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or at any time in the future.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Skilled at problem identification, prototyping and iterative design, validation testing, and troubleshooting.

  • Hands-on self-starters who can take a project from start to finish with ease.
  • Ability to challenge and provide creative ways to approach projects.

Responsibilities

  • Support product design initiatives, prototype stack assembly and quality control, and stack power assembly testing.
  • Work on product development, including concept development and testing.
  • Perform hands-on testing in the electrochemical lab and shop floor.
  • Operate pilot-scale sub-scale and full-scale equipment and machinery.
  • Conduct data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Design and model stack parts, GD&T, and subassemblies within SolidWorks.
  • Generate and modify manufacturing drawings and apply GD&T.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Perform preliminary structural analysis within SolidWorks.
  • Perform design calculations related to strength, temperature, and flow for stack parts.
  • Contribute to Design for Manufacture and Assembly.
  • Assemble, test, debug, and document mechanical fixtures and devices.
  • Participate in experimental design (DOE), root cause analysis, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.
