About The Position

MDA Space is seeking a Mechanical Designer for Space Products to join their satellite systems team in Montreal. This role involves working with a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop antennas and structures for state-of-the-art satellites. The designer will be responsible for developing concepts for custom space products for international clients, from the proposal phase through detailed design. This includes defining mechanical assembly components to meet client needs and withstand harsh space environmental conditions, using advanced software tools for modeling and simulation. The position also involves developing mass-production budgets, supporting manufacturing and mechanical testing, assisting in research and development of new designs, and monitoring international component suppliers. The designer will coordinate design-related activities to ensure project progression.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or an equivalent field
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (English/French)
  • Experience in mechanical design
  • Knowledge of geometric tolerances and drafting standards
  • Knowledge of CAD design (NX, Creo, or Catia)
  • Knowledge of the aerospace industry

Responsibilities

  • Design the mechanical components of antennas, payloads, or space electronics units
  • Understand customer requirements
  • Propose designs that meet the requirements
  • Select and design components based on the constraints to be met
  • Integrate designs from the fields of electrical engineering, materials science, structural analysis, and thermal analysis into a 3D model
  • Develop and review manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and bill of materials
  • Evaluate system costs and establish schedules
  • Monitor the progress of component suppliers’ activities
  • Support the integration and testing of components into higher-level assemblies (during the design and manufacturing phases)
  • Develop bill of materials (BOM) budgets
  • Present concepts to the client
